Questions
Is it safe to buy a house by the sea in Japan?
Check the tsunami map. When a listing gives an exact location we show whether the house is inside an official tsunami or flood zone; always confirm on the national hazard map before buying.
Where are the cheapest seaside houses?
On our site: Oita (45), Okinawa (44), Nagasaki (39). Small fishing towns on the Sea of Japan and in Shikoku and Kyushu are often far cheaper than Okinawa or the coast near Tokyo.
Can I rent my beach house to tourists?
Yes with a registration: Japan's private lodging law allows up to 180 nights a year; renting all year needs a simple-lodging (inn) licence. Rules vary by town.
